How To Clean LVT Flooring

Published on March 30th, 2021

Luxury vinyl tiles (LVT) and luxury vinyl planks (LVP) have become some of the most popular flooring options on the market today. They offer the perfect combination of durability and affordability. Plus, luxury vinyl floors can provide your space with the striking good looks of hardwood floors or virtually any other material.

But just because your new floors look like they’re made from hardwood, doesn’t mean you should clean them the same way. It’s important to learn how to clean LVT flooring so that you can keep them looking great for years to come.

How To Clean LVT Flooring

Start By Sweeping or Vacuuming

Whenever cleaning LVT or vinyl plank floors, be sure to start dry. Sweeping away the loose dirt and debris from your floors prevents it from getting stuck to your mop when you’re ready for a deeper clean.

You can also use a vacuum cleaner in place of a broom. Just be sure to adjust the height of the vacuum to the “bare floor” setting. And if you plan on vacuuming your vinyl floor, do NOT use “beater bar” attachments. These attachments will likely damage your vinyl flooring.

Moping

After removing the dry particles from your floor, it’s time to grab the mop. Although there are a variety of cleaning solutions on the market, white or apple cider vinegar can do the trick. The acidity of the vinegar binds to dirt and other substances, allowing them to wash away easily. Plus, vinegar won’t leave behind a soapy or waxy residue that other cleaners often do.

Rather than just pouring vinegar on the floor, mix a cup of it into a gallon of hot water. White vinegar will disinfect as it cleans. But for a bit of extra cleaning power, add a few drops of dish soap to the mixture before mopping.

If you add soap to your cleaning solution, give your floors a second past with just vinegar and water to remove any film the soap leaves behind. Putting a few drops of baby oil into the water/vinegar mixture will add shine to your vinyl floors as you clean them.

Remove Stains

To remove food stains from your LVT flooring, mix together a bit of baking soda and water into a paste. Next, apply the paste to any stains and gently rub them with a soft brush or rag. Once the stain wipes away, be sure to wash away all traces of the baking soda residue as well.

Remove Scuff Marks

For scuff marks on your LVT flooring, wet a towel with jojoba oil or WD-40. Then, take the damp towel and rub the scuff until it disappears. Lastly, clean away any traces of the oil with your water and vinegar solution.

What to Avoid

Now that you know the “dos” of how to clean LVT flooring, let’s cover a few of the “don’ts.”

  • Never use ammonia based cleaners. Doing so can crack vinyl flooring.
  • Never steam-clean vinyl flooring. Although the floors can handle the moisture, the heat may cause them to warp.
  • Never use steel wool or abrasive scrubbers. Doings so can leave permanent scratches that even WD-40 won’t buff out.

If you regularly clean your vinyl floors and do so without these abrasive cleaners, your floors should last you 10 to 20 years or longer.
